Grandmother's Ashes
My grandfather died in a snowmobile accident in 1971. His ashes were scattered off Galusha Peak, in the Bob Marshall Wilderness, an area of land that he had lobbied in Congress to protect through the Wilderness Act. And the peak was thusly named after him.
This summer, we’ll be scattering my grandmother’s ashes in the same place. It’ll be a long hike and there’s rumors...

My grandmother died tonight at 93. She had a very full life, singing a tune of adventure, sorrow, and investment. My favorite story is of how she studied music in Seattle, then headed to Panama to work on the canal. When she returned, she bought a parlor grand piano with her earnings. She was married to a highly interesting man, who made her a widow during a blizzard. She made a point to invest in...
